Samsung Galaxy : An Impressive Phone

With the launch of their latest iPhone, Apple has once again thrown down the gauntlet to the other mobile manufacturers. Despite it’s army of loyal followers, we’ve already seen that the iPhone 4 isn’t perfect, so could this be an opportunity for another smartphone to rise to the top? One thing’s for sure, it would still have to be a pretty impressive blend of looks and technology. Could Samsung’s best ever smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S, be the one to take on the iPhone?

With it’s impressive 4 inch screen housed in a light plastic body with chrome trim, the Samsung smartphone certainly has the look of a high end smartphone. The Galaxy S appears to have been influenced more than a little by the design of the iPhone family, but this realization only reinforces the view that it is a very good looking phone.

The screen is even more impressive when it’s switched on. The high resolution Super AMOLED display makes everything come to life on the phone. Colors are bright and vibrant, and the superb contrast makes everything appear crisp and clear. The visual performance of the display is matched by its touchscreen capabilities, with a responsive touch that is easy and enjoyable to use.

Both the iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S have 5 megapixel cameras, along with a number of other smartphones in the market, so the Samsung smartphone continues to hold its own. It does however have a variety of settings you can adjust which makes taking great pictures a bit easier. With night mode to make up for there being no flash, and high definition video capture, there is everything a snap happy user needs.

It’s when you are playing media on the Galaxy S that you start to think that this could actually be one of the best smartphone’s on the market. Samsung have worked hard to make the Samsung Galaxy S the best media player available, and if it isn’t, it’s pretty close – with the amazing screen for video, an impressive music player, and features like virtual surround sound. Plus there’s up to 48GB of storage, so you should have whatever you want to watch or listen, when you want it.

Samsung have added the latest version of their Touchwiz interface which overlays the most up to date Android operating system nicely. All the required connectivity options are present including GPS, 3G, WiFi and the latest Bluetooth. The Galaxy S manages to keep everything running with a speedy 1GHz processor and one of the most powerful batteries available.

The Samsung Galaxy S integrates all your communication needs, across all the usual platforms, including e-mail, messages, and social networking – so you’re never out of reach. Apps and widgets from Android and Samsung mean you can customize Samsung’s top smartphone to be what you want it to be.

The iPhone 4 is a tough act to beat, but the Samsung Galaxy S has all the credentials to put up a good fight. Will it win? It’s hard to say, as others have tried and failed. It will definitely give smartphone buyers a harder choice to make, and its impressive features will make sure enough of them come down on the side of the Samsung smartphone.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 : An Impressive Phone

Besides being a bargain among smartphones usually marketed towards the pricier end of the consumer electronics market, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is an uncomplicated version of the existing X10. Amongst other things, this Android phone boasts an above standard touchscreen – 3″ 320 x 480. With 3.5G support and a 2GB storage card included in the microSD slot there is plenty of room for all of your downloads and apps. Other cool features include an FM radio, WiFi, and GPS.

The buttons on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 are in the familiar Android phone places with the home and back keys where one would expect to find them. To the right are the camera and volume keys, and up top you can find the power/lock key, the microUSB port, and a 3.5mm connector port. While the body might feel a little cheap because of the type of plastic on the back, this device is still one of the best looking smartphones on the market today.

The battery is relatively powerful – delivering up to 5 hours 40 minutes of 3G talk time. Even though the X8′s processor is not quite as fast as some of the higher end Android phones, its 600 MHz processor and 128 MB of RAM will still handle most tasks with ease.

The interface for the 3.2 megapixel camera on the back of the phone is simple and easy to understand, even the video camera. While flash or auto focus would have been nice features if included, the quality of the pictures and videos are well above par, especially when transferred to a computer.

Current X8 models have the Android 1.6 operating system installed, though you will be able to upgrade to 2.1 very soon. Sony plans to ship X8′s with 2.1 already installed later this year. Because this is an Android phone, you will be able to take advantage of the Android Market, adding all your favorite apps with just a few clicks.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 has a very modern, stylish look that manages to be small yet remain fully functional. For the right market demographic, it provides all the services you could want. So who is the right market demographic? The phone is clearly designed to be affordable, and unfortunately, it seems Sony met this goal by going with reduced internet browsing ability. If you want a reliable phone at a good price and do not plan on doing much internet browsing, then this is a good choice.
